Photography & Concept: MARIA LOEWENSTEIN & NOEMI JAMES- BUTTINGER
The silly walk first received global recognition in Charlie Chaplin’s character „The Tramp“ and became an unforgettable classic in Monty Pythons „Ministry of Silly Walks“.
In Vienna, the Silly Walk is in search of old and often forgotten stores, their iconic typographies and unique storefronts, that give the city its exclusive character however are on the verge of disappearing.
The Silly Walk shows in a playful way, how valuable these old signs are for the multicultural city in the heart of Europe.
The Austrian photographer Maria Loewenstein, who has lived in Los Angeles for the past 20 years, returns to her second home to portray it from a new angle.
Together with actress and artist Noemi Sophia James-Buttinger, who also lived and studied in New York City, they embark on a photographic journey.
Through this artistic adventure they were also able to engage with the store owners who enthusiastically shared their stories so they will not be forgotten.

IF I EVER GROW UP
2019/2020
Vienna/ Los Angeles/ Lyon

If I ever grow up,
I'm gonna go to the future,
and when I'm there,
my car is able to fly,
to space.

and maybe heaven,
where I'm gonna visit grandma and grandpa,
and maybe,
they're gonna join me sometime,
in the car

my big red car,
which is the fastest in the world,
and the biggest.

If I Ever Grow Up is a children's book project coming to life through the hands of creative visionary Maria Loewenstein and venturous illustrator Donatelle Liens.

The project is inspired by a song written by Austrian composer Klemens Loewenstein.

Donatelle Liens traveled to Los Angeles earlier this year from Lyon, France to complete a creative residency and meet Austrian born artist Maria Loewenstein to collaborate on this passion project. Documenting their artistic journey, sparked multiple ideas for future collaborations and rekindled an old friendship that started years ago.

If I ever grow up redefines gender roles and encourages young girls and boys to dream without limiting themselves to ideas that might have subconsciously been implanted by society.

Austria’s musical star Lisa Antoni, who lend her voice to the German version of Disney's Mary Poppins Returns, also signed onto the project and will sing the original song "If I Ever Grow Up".

The project is expected to be completed mid 2020.

CLAY SCULPTURE
2019

Taking a weekend sculpting class reminded me that our whole lives we will discover talents that have been hiding within us. This was my first time working with clay. After I was done comparing myself to everyone else in the class and focus on just having fun, I started enjoying this process so much more. I encourage every one to try something new, something out of the comfort zone.
Meet this creation that is 29% skelton, 29% clown, 29% robot and 3% chicken.

Ziiita! is a children’s book collaboration between Sara Levinskas and myself.

Envisioned and written by both of us, the talented painter Sara Levinskas took charge of the illustrations, so that they could be digitized and colored by me afterwards.

Project is expected to be completed early 2020.

“Tha House” is an art photography project between me and Viennese actor Orlando Suess.

What started out as a casual afternoon between friends, quickly turned into the artist, me, asking the actor, the poor bastard who is friends with me, to wear a cat house on his head. Stay tuned!!!
